Art is present in the most diverse religious landscapes, particularly in Catholicism, and is an invaluable pedagogical resource. The aim of this study is to find out how art can be a privileged strategy in the teaching-learning process in the subject of Religious and Moral Education, at Externato São José (East Timor), and how it can facilitate religious tolerance. To respond to this investigative starting point, a methodological strategy of a qualitative nature was used, specifically the interview, in order to understand the speech and practices of teachers who teach the discipline of Religious and Moral Education, and of non-catholic students, in Timor-Leste, specifically at the Externato S. José School. The work developed showed that in the subject of Religious and Moral Education the use of art as a teaching-learning strategy is doubly limited. Materially limited, as Externato S. José lacks resources that allow it to disseminate art, mainly the projection of artistic elements; formatively limited, as Religion and Moral teachers, in addition to not having training in this area, also do not have artistic training. Thus, although it was clear that the subject of Religion and Moral does not reproduce the catholic catechism, which naturally is in favor of the non-exclusion of non-catholic students, it was also clear that teachers limit the artistic field to the catholic universe. Therefore, in this case, as possibly in others, the importance of non-exclusion does not guarantee inclusion. In fact, empirical data shows that there is no pedagogical use of any elements, particularly artistic ones, of other beliefs outside catholicism. Finally, the research carried out leads us to suppose that training in Art Education for teachers could encourage a wider range of artistic resources, particularly from other religious beliefs, which would allow for a more sustained knowledge of the Catholic religion itself and would certainly encourage religious tolerance.pt_PT
