da vaga 7 e vaga 9 do projeto SHARE (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe), com
(Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), versão 29.
Abstract Background and objectives: The European continent is one of the oldest in the world, and Portugal ranks among the oldest countries in Europe. Gender plays a very important role in the aging process. Although women have a higher life expectancy, according to the literature, they also have worse health, worse functionality, worse subjective well-being, and therefore lower levels of Quality of Life (QoL) compared to men. Studies have highlighted the importance of sociodemographic, economic, and health determinants for the QoL of women in older ages. Moreover, the importance of some childhood and youth characteristics for the QoL of older women has been increasingly emphasized. This idea is also supported by the Life Course perspective, which advocates the importance of linking the individual's current situation with the earlier phases of their life. Thus, the main objective of this study is to analyze the importance of sociodemographic, economic, and health characteristics, as well as factors related to life course, for the current QoL of Portuguese women aged 70 and over. Method: This study is cross-sectional and correlational in nature and was developed in two phases. In the first phase, for statistical analyses, data from waves 7 and 9 of the SHARE (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe) project were used, with a sample of 357 women aged 70+. In the second phase, in the qualitative approach, seven women aged 70+ who participate in the Senior Academy of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo were interviewed. For quantitative analysis, the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software, version 29, was used. For the content analysis of the interviews, the MAXQDA Plus 24 software was used. Results: Older women (80+ years) exhibit lower levels of QoL compared to younger women (70- 79 years) (t (120,224), 2,115, p = ,037). In both groups, better financial perception, better selfperception of health, fewer limitations in performing ADLs and IADLs, and lower depressive symptoms are related to higher levels of QoL. In the younger age group, higher levels of education, as well as greater social network size and satisfaction, are also related to higher levels of QoL. Furthermore, there is a relationship between some factors related to the women's childhood and youth and their current QoL. In the group of women aged 80+, higher levels of QoL are related to a better financial condition of the family up to the age of 16 (r = ,268, p = ,040). Similarly, having good to excellent health up to age 15 is related to better QoL (t (59), 2,072, p = ,043), as is establishing a good to excellent relationship with the father up to age 17 (t (52), 2,048, p = ,046). In the case of women aged 70-79, maintaining a good to excellent relationship with the mother until the age of 17 (t (170), 2,138, p = ,034) was also related to higher levels of QoL. Content analysis of the interviews concluded that during the interviewees' childhood and youth, their social roles were strongly conditioned in the social/community sphere, in the domestic sphere, at school, and at work. Moreover, it identified a set of important events that marked the women's life trajectories and influenced their aging process. Conclusion: These results highlight the relevance of considering life course characteristics in the study of QoL in older ages and emphasize the possibility that women may accumulate multiple disadvantages throughout their lives. |
