Envelhecimento e sentido de comunidade : um estudo na zona piscatória das Caxinas - Vila do Conde

Abstract

O envelhecimento demográfico constituí um aspeto central do debate académico e político da atualidade (Dias & Rodrigues, 2012). O aumento da população idosa resulta de dois aspetos: aumento da longevidade e redução da natalidade (Goldstein, 2009). Neste contexto, Phillipson (2010) salienta a existência de uma forte relação entre ambiente e envelhecimento. O processo de envelhecimento não depende exclusivamente das particularidades individuais da pessoa, mas também do ambiente em que está inserido. Neste sentido, torna-se crucial estudar o sentido de comunidade. Newbrough e Chavis (1986) defendem que o sentido de comunidade diz respeito ao conhecimento pessoal que se tem sobre a pertença a uma coletividade. Assim, o presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar as relações entre variáveis sociodemográficas e o sentido de comunidade em Caxinas-Vila do Conde. Para responder às questões de investigação, foi realizado um estudo de natureza quantitativa do tipo correlacional. Para o efeito selecionou-se uma amostra de 117 participantes com 65 ou mais anos, a residir na zona geográfica estabelecida. Para avaliar o sentido de comunidade, foi usado os seguintes intrumentos: Ficha Sociodemográfica, Escala Breve de Sentimento de Comunidade (EBSC) (Peterson, Speer & McMillan, 2008; versão portuguesa de Marante, 2010), a Escala da Importância da Comunidade (Moreira & Lind, 2010) e a Escala de Depressão Geriátrica (GDS-15; Yesavage, Brink, Rose, Lum, Huang, Adey & Leirer, 1983; versão portuguesa de Barreto, Leuschner, Santos & Sobral, 2003). Utilizando uma regressão linear múltipla entre o sentido de comunidade e as restantes dimensões estudadas, verifica-se que os resultados apontaram que a escolaridade, o estado civil, a relação com os vizinhos afetam positivamente o sentido de comunidade. Quanto à satisfação de necessidades, verifica-se que a escolaridade, a relação com os vizinhos e os anos de vida no mesmo lugar afetam esta. No que se refere ao envolvimento, a escolariedade, o estado civil, o tempo de vida no mesmo lugar e a relação de vizinhança influenciam esta dimensão. Na importância de Comunidade, a idade influencia de forma negativa esta variável. O tempo de vida no mesmo lugar e a relação com os vizinhos influencia positivamente a importância de comunidade. Por último, ao analisar a sintomatologia depressiva, verifica-se que a escolaridade influencia negativamente a sintomatologia depressiva, isto é, por cada ano que anda na escola, a sintomatologia depressiva diminui. Em termos de implicações recomenda-se a prossecução deste estudo em outras zonas territoriais de Vila do Conde, no sentido de melhor compreender o fenómeno neste território. Do ponto de vista da pratica gerontológica recomenda-se que os programas e serviços de retaguarda a velhice tenham em conta o sentido de pertença ao lugar.

Abstract The aging population constitutes a central aspect of the academic and political debate today (Dia & Rodrigues, 2012). The increase in the elderly population is the result of two aspects: increased longevity and reduced fertility (Goldstein, 2009). In this context, Phillipson (2010) observes that there is a strong relationship between the environment and aging. The aging process does not depend solely on the individual characteristics of the person, but also the environment in which it operates. In this context, it is crucial to study the sense of community. Newbrough and Chavis (1986) argue that the sense of community tells the personal knowledge we have belonged to a collectivity. Thus, this study aims to analyze the relationship between sociodemographic variables and the sense of community in Caxinas-Vila do Conde. To answer the research questions, a study of the quantitative correlational type was performed. To this end, we selected a sample of 117 participants aged 65 years or older, residing in the geographical zone established. To evaluate the sense of community was used the following instruments: Sociodemographic Data, Scale Brief Sense of Community (EBSC) (Peterson, Speer & McMillan, 2008; Portuguese version Marante, 2010), the Scale of Community Importance (Moreira & Lind, 2010) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15; Yesavage, Brink, Rose, Lum, Huang, Adey & Leirer, 1983, portuguese version of Barreto, Leuschner, Santos & Sobral, 2003). Using a linear regression multiple between the sense of community and the remaining dimensions studied, it appears that the results indicated that the education, marital status, relationship with neighboring positively affect the sense of community. As for the satisfaction of needs, it appears that the education, the relationship with neighbors and the years of life in one place affect this. As regards the involvement, escolariedade, marital status, time of life in the same place and the neighborhood relationship influence this dimension. The importance of community, age negatively influences this variable. The lifetime in the same place and the relationship with neighboring positively influences the importance of community. Finally, when analyzing depressive symptoms, it appears that education negatively influences depressive symptoms, ie, for each year that goes to school, depressive symptoms decreases. In terms of the further implications of this study in other geographical areas of Vila do Conde, in order to better understand the phenomenon in this area is recommended. From the point of view of gerontological practice it is recommended that programs and backup services take into account the age old sense of belonging to the place.
