Abstract Although many researchers refer to the advantages of teaching the arts for the development of skills, knowledge, values and general training of students, few generalist and specialist teachers are able to defend the importance of arts education, their beliefs and teach the arts so that these benefits are evident. Arts Education has a fundamental role in the preservation of the cultural heritage of humanity, however, it has been sidelined in relation to the so-called "nuclear" disciplines (more "serious" disciplines and indispensable for the immediate training of the individual in their insertion in the job market). In Cape Verde, with the entry of the democratic regime in the 1990s and with the Educational Reforms, it was decided to introduce several expressive languages, however this model failed because of the lack of trained teachers in the area, and of infrastructural conditions in the schools. Recently, the government decided to create conditions for specific training in the field of Arts Education. However, teachers complain about having difficulty in teaching the three Expressions (Plastic, Dramatic and Music) having greater difficulty in Dramatic Expression. All of this contributes to the lack of visibility of the discipline and that it is increasingly devalued. This study aims to understand the importance of the discipline of Artistic Education for the development of children and the promotion of their valorization. The study is based on a mixed paradigm, having the case study as its research method. The instruments/techniques of data collection used were the interview, participant observation, document analysis (national programs, basic law of the education system), and a questionnaire, one for young people, the other for adults. The sample is formed by Art Education teachers, students of the 2nd cycle of Basic Education, artists, and directors and teachers of other subjects. In each of the schools where I carried out the study, the direction and teachers (in Arts Education and other areas) were aware of the investigation before it was carried out, and a request for authorization was also sent to parents and guardians.pt_PT
