This study stems from the need to change teaching practices. It gives special attention to innovation and the way English is taught to Year 4 schoolchildren. In a constantly changing world, schoolchildren have diversified interests and necessities and thus they need stimulating and engaging activities that will provide them with moments of effective, creative and motivating learning in order to enhance their interest in the learning of English. The action-research method was employed in this study, as it was considered the most appropriate method, not only because it allows continuity, but also because it is a methodology that involves planning, action, reflection and evaluation, as well as reformulation and adaptation of functional strategies in the teaching-learning process whenever necessary. The present study covered six sessions in which diversified activities were implemented to entwine English language skills with musical skills, in an interdisciplinary symbiosis of knowledge acquisition. Different types of musical activities were used as a preparatory and stimulating resource in the teaching-learning process. These activities have proved to encourage concentration and, at the same time, increase the levels of attention and self-assurance, as well as, coordination, self-esteem and motivation of seven to ten-year-old schoolchildren. Moreover, these activities have facilitated language learning. The results of this study have thus revealed that musical activities not only increase motivation but also promote meaningful and enjoyable language learning. The implications of this study are felt at several levels and it can be concluded that learning English with Music complement each other. The results of this study have thus revealed that musical activities when articulated with English language content can increase motivation and promote meaningful and enjoyable learning.pt_PT
