Context and objectives: Ageing in Portugal has occurred progressively and gradually. There are countless ways of growing old, related not only to the variability of people's characteristics, but also to the socio-cultural context in which they live. Thus, ageing concerns biological and psychological changes, but also social patterns and the way communities perceive the ageing process (Miguel, 2014). The images associated with this process include behaviors, concepts, beliefs, emotions and stereotypes that tend to become evident throughout life and can take on forms of discrimination, such as ageism (Ribeiro, 2007). This term was introduced by Butler in 1969 and is characterized as a process of stereotyping and systematic discrimination based on age. Ageist attitudes towards older people can take on three components: (i) stereotypes, (ii) prejudice and (iii) discrimination (Marques, 2011), with an impact on their well-being and quality of life. Therefore, the general objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between images and stereotypes about old age and the quality of life of young adults and older adults. The specific objectives are to characterize the images and stereotypes of young adults and older adults about the elderly and the ageing process; to assess the relationship between images and stereotypes about old age and specific variables and to analyze whether there are differences in relation to the image and stereotypes about old age depending on the generation to which they belong. Method: This was a quantitative, cross-sectional, non-experimental, correlational study. The sample consisted of 122 participants, including 62 young people (aged 17-24) and 60 older adults (aged 65 or over), without cognitive impairment, living in the community and attending the IPVC or a Senior University in Northern Portugal. The sampling process was non-probabilistic for convenience, and a sociodemographic questionnaire, the specific questionnaire about ageism, the WHOQOL-Bref quality of life assessment questionnaire (Canavarro et al., 2010) and the ImAges Scale (Sousa et al., 2008) were used for data collection. The protocol was selfadministered, and data collection took place between September and December 2023. The descriptive and inferential analysis of the data was carried out using the IBM SPSS program, version 27. Results: The participants were aged between 17 and 83 (M=45.34; SD=26.1), mostly female, 69.4% (n=84), single 53.5% (n=65) and with an education level of 10th-12th grade (55%). With regard to the quality of life domains, the highest average score on the WHOQOL-Bref scale was in the social relations domain (M=73.84; SD=16.37) and the lowest in the environment domain (M=70.13; SD=15.50). In relation to the domains of the ImAges Scale, it was in the domain of relational and cognitive incompetence that the score was highest (M=22.01; SD=6.36) and in the domain of physical and emotional dependence and outdatedness that the score was lowest (M=20.62; SD=5.07). Statistically significant differences were observed in the images of old age according to age groups, with young people having more negative images of "Physical and emotional dependence and old-fashionedness" (t(108)=-2.815; p=0.006) and the elderly of "Relational and cognitive incompetence" (t(100)=2.945; p=.004). There were also negative and statistically significant associations in the case of the elderly between mental health and the factors "Physical and emotional dependence and old-fashioned" (r=-.354, p=.018.) and "Relational and cognitive incompetence" (r=-.457, p=.004). Conclusion: Promoting ageing with quality of life implies actions to combat ageism in its various dimensions: individual, family, social and institutional, with the main aim of demystifying the negative images and stereotypes associated with the elderly in society.
