Abstract Context: The aging of the population with well-being and quality of life is one of the challenges facing science and contemporary society. People are living longer and, in many cases, in better conditions than in the past (Fernandez-Ballesteros, 2009). Even so, there is still little consensus on the concept of well-being, which is often confused with happiness or quality of life (Coelho, 2022). Purpose in life, a central dimension of psychological well-being according to Ryff (1989, 2014), refers to the perception of direction and existential meaning. It is associated with satisfaction, self-esteem, personal growth, and greater resilience in the face of adversity (Ribeiro et al., 2020; Santos et al., 2019). According to the WHO (2015), the term well-being is considered in its broadest sense and covers issues such as happiness, satisfaction, and fulfillment. In aging, two complementary perspectives stand out: subjective well-being (Diener, 1984) and psychological well-being (Ryff, 1989, 2014), reinforcing the relevance of studying purpose in life and well-being. If we consider the aging of the population on a global scale, we see that older people want to live at home for as long as possible. However, there are situations in which living at home becomes difficult for performing daily activities, leading part of the population to reside in residential facilities for the elderly (ERPI). Nevertheless, this living context has been little investigated. Objectives of the study: The present study aims to analyze the well-being of people aged 65 or older residing in nursing homes based on sociodemographic characteristics. Method: This is a quantitative, non-experimental study conducted with approximately 60 participants aged 65 or older, residing in nursing homes. This study is part of a broader research project carried out within the scope of the Research and Intervention Network on Aging. Data collection was carried out using a multidimensional protocol, and only the following instruments will be considered in this study: (1) Sociodemographic Questionnaire; (2) Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS; Diener et al., 1985; Portuguese version by Neto et al., 1990); (3) Purpose in Life Scale – one of the dimensions of the Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS; Ryff, 1989; Portuguese version by Novo et al., 1997, 2003). Results obtained: This study included 57 participants, mostly female (68.4%) and widowed (54.4%), with an average age of 84.1 years (Min= 69 years; Max= 95 years). More than half of the participants had between 1 and 4 years of schooling (59.7%), and 61.4% reported using health services. With regard to life satisfaction and purpose in life, no statistically significant differences were found based on sociodemographic variables, although a tendency toward slightly higher life satisfaction scores was observed among participants aged 85 or older. Conclusion: Considering the sample size and characteristics of the participants, further studies in this field are recommended, given the relevance of well-being associated with population aging. Ensuring a better quality of life and well-being as disability sets in is one of the major goals of Social Gerontology. |
