Os clubes de campo americanos como age-friendly communities : um retrato do Boca West Country Club

Abstract

Nos Estados Unidos da América, é comum que a comunidade sénior se associe a clubes de campo, pois estes promovem uma vida ativa para os mais velhos através do desporto, atividades de lazer, entretenimento e bem-estar. Este estudo foca-se no conceito de “comunidades amigos do idoso” (age-friendly), com ênfase no Boca West Country Club e na cidade de Boca Raton, explorando como estes espaços podem proporcionar num envelhecimento saudável e inclusivo, num contexto de crescimento da população idosa. O estudo resulta do estágio realizado no Boca West Country Club, na Flórida, entre outubro de 2022 e maio de 2023, no âmbito do Mestrado em Turismo, Inovação e Desenvolvimento do Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo. O objetivo principal é identificar boas práticas do BWCC como uma comunidade age-friendly, no contexto do turismo ativo e bem-estar. O clube promove este tipo de turismo através de atividades como golfe, ténis, caminhadas e programas sociais, alinhando-se com os princípios do bem-estar. Além da observação participante no Departamento de F&B (Food & Beverage), foi possível observar diretamente a forma de utilização das restantes instalações e a consulta de documentação fornecida pelo clube para estabelecer a relação entre os resultados e a indicação da literatura científica. Os resultados indicam que o Boca West Country Club é um exemplo de boas práticas de clubes de campo como comunidades age-friendly. As instalações e os programas promovem um ambiente inclusivo e favorável ao envelhecimento, respondendo às necessidades dos membros. A pesquisa reforça a importância de desenvolver políticas e práticas que apoiem a integração social e o bem-estar dos idosos, tanto nos clubes de campo como nas comunidades.

In the United States, it is common for the senior community to join country clubs, as they promote an active life for seniors through sports, leisure activities, entertainment and well-being. This study focuses on the concept of “age-friendly communities”, with an emphasis on the Boca West Country Club and the city of Boca Raton, exploring how these spaces can provide for healthy and inclusive ageing, in a context of a growing elderly population. The study is the result of an internship carried out at the Boca West Country Club in Florida between October 2022 and May 2023, as part of the master’s degree in Tourism, Innovation and Development at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. The main objective is to identify BWCC's good practices as an age-friendly community, in the context of active tourism and wellness. The club promotes this type of tourism through activities such as golf, tennis, hiking and social programs, aligning itself with the principles of well-being. In addition to participant observation in the F&B (Food & Beverage) Department, it was possible to directly observe how the other facilities were used and to consult documentation provided by the club to establish the relationship between the results and the scientific literature. The results indicate that Boca West Country Club is a best practice example of country clubs as age-friendly communities. The facilities and programs promote an inclusive and age-friendly environment, responding to members' needs. The research reinforces the importance of developing policies and practices that support the social integration and well-being of older adults, both in country clubs and in communities.
